Our Approach to Mathematics: Power Maths
At Chapelhill Primary, we are committed to developing confident, resilient, and fluent mathematicians who possess a genuine love of learning. We use Power Maths as our core curriculum—a world-class mastery program designed to ensure that every child can succeed and flourish in mathematics.
Key features of our approach include:
- Securing the Fundamentals: Power Maths follows a "small-steps" progression. By focusing on securing essentials first, we ensure children have the firm foundations necessary to tackle more complex multi-step problems. We use the program’s built-in diagnostic tools to identify and bridge any gaps in understanding before moving on.
- Adaptive Teaching for Mixed-Age Classes: In our mixed-age settings, we utilise Power Maths’ specifically designed mixed-age materials. This allows children across different year groups to explore similar concepts simultaneously, fostering shared rich discussions while ensuring every child meets their specific year-group expectations.
- Number Sense & Fluency: To foster automaticity, Power Maths integrates daily practice that develops a deep "feel" for numbers and additive/multiplicative reasoning. By ensuring basic facts are at their fingertips, we reduce cognitive load, allowing pupils to focus on higher-level problem-solving.
- Inclusive Design & SEND Support: We believe every child is a mathematician. Power Maths is built on a Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) model, which provides bespoke scaffolding for all learners. For pupils with SEND, this consistent structure ensures they are fully included in the mastery journey through clear visual representations and targeted support.
- Closing Attainment Gaps: We are proactive in identifying and closing learning gaps. By utilising Power Maths’ integrated end-of-unit assessments and "Strengthen" activities, we provide precision teaching and small-group interventions to ensure that no child falls behind.
- Reasoning and Problem-Solving: A culture of curiosity is at the heart of every lesson. Through the Power Maths "Discover" and "Share" phases, children are encouraged to explain their thinking and make connections, cultivating a growth mindset that sees mistakes as valuable steps toward discovery.
By utilising the rigour and structure of Power Maths, we aim to create a learning environment where all pupils—regardless of age or starting point—can thrive. Our approach equips children with the skills, resilience, and passion they need to succeed in mathematics and beyond.
