Early Years Foundation Stage

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

At Chapelhill Primary, our Early Years Foundation Stage provides a secure, nurturing, and stimulating environment where children are supported to develop a strong foundation for lifelong learning. We recognise that children learn best through positive relationships, meaningful experiences, and high-quality interactions.

Curriculum and Learning

Our EYFS curriculum is underpinned by the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage and is informed by Development Matters and Birth to 5 Matters. These documents guide our planning, assessment, and teaching to ensure progression and continuity in learning.

We support children’s development across the seven areas of learning:

  • Communication and Language

  • Physical Development

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development

  • Literacy

  • Mathematics

  • Understanding the World

  • Expressive Arts and Design

Our curriculum is designed to ensure that all children make progress towards achieving the Early Learning Goals (ELGs) [See document in the folder below] by the end of Reception, preparing them effectively for Key Stage 1.

Teaching and Assessment

Learning is planned through a balance of adult-led and child-initiated activities, allowing children to explore, investigate, and develop independence. Ongoing observation and assessment inform next steps and ensure learning is responsive to individual needs.

Inclusion and Welfare

We are committed to inclusive practice and meeting the needs of all children, including those with SEND. Safeguarding, welfare, and wellbeing are prioritised in line with EYFS statutory requirements.

Admissions and Early Education Entitlement

Children may join our Nursery and Reception provision in line with the school’s admissions policy.

Eligible families may be entitled to 30 hours of free childcare. If your child is aged 9 months to 4 years old you can get 30 hours per week of free childcare for 38 weeks of the year.
